UVB Phototherapy Treatment at Cahaba Dermatology

UVB Phototherapy for Psoriasis and Vitiligo

At Cahaba Dermatology, we use Narrowband UVB (NB-UVB) phototherapy to treat psoriasis and vitiligo with safe, in-office light treatments tailored to each patient.

Light therapy has been used for many years to calm inflammation and improve visible symptoms. Our team offers a full therapeutic spectrum for psoriasis, including UV light therapy, targeted excimer laser treatment, and oral, topical, and injectable options when needed.

Treatments are quick and painless, and our experienced staff is here to help you feel comfortable and supported throughout your care.

How UVB Phototherapy Works

UVB helps manage psoriasis by slowing rapid skin-cell turnover and reducing inflammatory activity in the skin. It may also support the skin’s natural anti-inflammatory response.

For vitiligo, we use NB-UVB to treat areas where pigment has faded. Over time, this light therapy can help restore color more evenly. Unlike older PUVA treatments, NB-UVB does not require photosensitizing medication.

Treatment usually starts after we determine your skin’s light tolerance (Minimal Erythema Dose, or MED). Sessions begin at a lower dose and are gradually increased. Most patients are treated two to three times per week for several months.

To improve results when appropriate, NB-UVB may be combined with topical treatments such as vitamin D analogues or retinoids, or with systemic medications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions do you treat with UVB phototherapy?

At Cahaba Dermatology, we use UVB phototherapy primarily for psoriasis and vitiligo.

What is treatment like week to week?

Most patients come in two to three times per week for brief, painless sessions. We start below your MED (Minimal Erythema Dose).and gradually increase exposure based on how your skin responds.

Can UVB be combined with other psoriasis treatments?

Yes. NB-UVB is sometimes used alongside topical therapies (such as calcipotriene or tazarotene) or systemic medications when clinically appropriate.

How effective is NB-UVB for plaque psoriasis?

NB-UVB is a well-established treatment for plaque psoriasis and is effective even at doses below MED (Minimal Erythema Dose), which can help reduce side effects. Clinical reviews have reported strong improvement outcomes, including complete clearing in many patients and meaningful severity reduction after consistent treatment.

Do you offer other forms of light therapy?

Yes. Cahaba Dermatology offers several light-based treatments, including UVB, UVA, and targeted excimer phototherapy.

UVB phototherapy is often used when larger areas of skin need treatment, including for psoriasis and vitiligo.

Excimer laser treatment is more targeted, so it can focus on specific spots.

UVA-based therapies may also be used in select treatment plans.

During your visit, we’ll evaluate your skin and recommend the option that best fits your condition, treatment area, and goals.
