Dermal Fillers to Restore Volume and Soften Facial Lines

Increased lines and wrinkles are a natural part of aging. Over time, the face can lose volume, leading to fine lines, folds, thinning lips, and changes in facial contours. Dermal fillers are a non-surgical way to restore volume beneath the skin and soften these visible signs of aging while maintaining a natural appearance.

At Cahaba Dermatology, dermal fillers are used thoughtfully to improve areas such as smile lines, lines around the mouth, under-eye hollowness, cheek and temple volume loss, jawline definition, chin wrinkles, marionette lines, and thinning lips. Treatment is always individualized based on facial structure and personal goals.

Dermal filler treatment begins with a careful evaluation to understand where volume has been lost and how subtle enhancement can best support facial balance. The goal is never to overfill, but to restore softness and structure in a way that looks refreshed and still very much like you.

How Dermal Fillers Work

As skin ages, it produces less collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, which can result in sagging, hollows, and wrinkles. Dermal fillers are injectable solutions placed beneath the skin to restore volume, improve elasticity, and support smoother contours.

Most dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body. Treatment typically involves minimal discomfort, no required downtime, and allows patients to return to normal activities immediately. Results generally last between six and eighteen months, depending on the treatment area and type of filler used. Your dermatologist will help determine the most appropriate approach during your consultation.

Types of Dermal Fillers

Juvéderm®

JUVÉDERM® uses “next generation” hyaluronic acid approved by the FDA. It is a dermal filler composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally-occurring substance found in the body. Different variations of JUVÉDERM® are available to smooth wrinkles and add natural-looking volume to the mid and upper face. The JUVÉDERM® family includes: JUVÉDERM® Ultra, JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus, JUVÉDERM® Voluma®, JUVÉDERM® Volbella®, and JUVÉDERM® Vollure®.

Restylane®

Restylane® is an excellent option for patients looking to fill in hollow areas under the eyes, as well as the nasolabial folds and lips. Restylane® can increase lip size, reduce the appearance of marionette lines, and add volume to the cheeks and temples. This filler is ideal where the skin’s support structures have weakened, causing depressions in the skin. The Restylane® family includes: Restylane® Refyne, Restylane® Defyne, Restylane® Lyft, Restylane® Silk. Restylane® Lyft has also been FDA approved to rejuvenate hands.

BELOTERO®

This dermal filler is ideal for immediately correcting lines in the lips and surrounding area.

Radiesse®

Radiesse® can restore volume to the mid and lower face, including the chin and mouth. Radiesse® is composed of calcium-based microspheres and can also stimulate the production of new collagen fibers under skin to restore the skin structure and elasticity. It is a great filler to define the jawline and add volume to hands.

Sculptra®

Sculptra® is made from poly-L-lactic acid and can reinforce the structure of your skin by restoring lost collagen. Upon injection, Sculptra® begins encouraging the production of subsurface collagen, which can reduce wrinkles and fine lines and promote firmer-looking skin

Unlike similar dermal fillers, Sculptra® works to treat facial wrinkles at the source. Sculptra® works deep into the skin’s dermis to replace lost collagen. By restoring depleted collagen, wrinkles and folds will gradually soften for a youthful-looking appearance.
